The amount of loot you get is dependent on the number of Medabots you destroy. More specificly, it depends on the number of Medaparts that was destroyed. You get one item drop roll per Medabot destroyed, and one roll may result in more than one stack of items.
As such, it is NOT recommended to destroy the leader straight away and to attempt to destroy as many Medaparts at once.
